Fukuda, T. (2019).  Public Policies and Ethnic Entrepreneurs Dealing Used Cars and Car Parts from Japan to the Global Market: Focusing on Pakistani and South Asian Transnational Migrants. Gerpisa colloquium.

Purpose (the outline of the research questions)
There are many migrant entrepreneurs engaged in used cars and used parts trading business in Japan. South Asians including Pakistani are representative actors in these industries. Their markets spread not only inside Japan but also all over the world. Pakistani used car dealers are famous among African, South American and Oceanian markets.
Why are there many Pakistani and South Asian entrepreneurs in this field? The reason is not simple. The multiple factors overlap, such as historical circumstances, political changes, economic trends, transition of legal systems or development of immigration networks. In this paper, we focus on the influences of the public policies of each country. The goal of this paper is to make it clear how Pakistani and South Asian migrants form their own niche markets and expand transnational trading networks, and, in addition, what roles their ethnic ties have in the formation of transnational communities.

Design (Methodology)
Presenter has engaged in research on Pakistani and South Asian migrant communities since 1998, focusing on entrepreneur networks (mainly used car and used parts dealers) in Japan, the UAE, Pakistan and New Zealand. This presentation is based on sociological research including field-works, interviews, participant observations, and other demographic and trade statistic data. read more

Current Status and Problems of Japanese Automobile Recycling System

Asazuma, Y., Okamoto K., & Togawa K. (2019).  Current Status and Problems of Japanese Automobile Recycling System. Gerpisa colloquium.

Current Status and Problems of Japanese Automobile Recycling System

In Japan, Automobile recycling law introduced in 2005. The background of this policy is to promote proper disposal , to suppress illegal dumping, and to achieve the high rate of automobile recycling. The automobile recycling law was enacted, launching simultaneously the "Japan model" automobile recycling system under the leadership of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Japan's automobile recycling law requires the automakers (and importers) to do the proper treatment of CFC gas , airbags and ASR, with special emphasis given to the recycling of ASR on a business competition basis( Togawa, 2007).
Recently Stats of Japanese recycling system is as follows(JARC, 2019). Now recycling rate is over 99%. The number of processing is 3.3 million in 2017. This number includes the light vehicle (under 660cc). light vehicle was processed 1.4 million in 2017. Light vehicle dismantling market became big gradually. The weight of ASR per one vehicle is 185kg in 2017. The number doesn’t change drastically recently. Average rate of using period of automobile gradually increasing. In 2017, the average is 15.3 years. Now the policy is working well. After introducing, illegal dumping became out of problem. read more

Despite their good results, French automakers are imposing wage moderation

French automakers now imposing wage moderation...

February in corporate France is both the month of the presentation of financial results and the month in which management and trade union organisations must close the so-called Négociations Annuelles Obligatoires ("mandatory annual negotiations").

Led in the midst of the "yellow vests" social movement in a context where PSA is doing very well and Renault is doing well, one might have expected that after having imposed years of hardship, manufacturers would have given up a little in France and granted the wage increases requested by the unions for 2019.
Indeed, while management is quite happy to grant bonuses that have the great merit of being able to be awarded or not from one year to the next depending on the company's results, and are also exempt from social security contributions, they are reluctant to accept general salary increases.
Conversely, trade unions would like to obtain wage increases that are irreversible and involve an increase in contributions and, therefore, in unemployment or pension rights later.
