Delivery principles like Just in Sequence (JIS) and Just in Time (JIS) induce massive requirements for the control of supply chains in the automotive industry. Furthermore, the responsibility of suppliers is changing from part production to the development and delivery of large subsystems. Discrete event simulation is a well-proved method to analyse the dynamic behaviour of such inter-linked manufacturing systems. Today, simulation systems for manufacturing are basically closed systems, which always run the complete scenario within one simulation execution machine. This brings several disadvantages, especially for the efficiency of the teamwork, the reusability of simulation models and the protection of the intellectual property rights (IPR). Methods have been developed to efficiently structure the simulation model into several separate federates. These run on different computers within different simulation execution machines. A new architecture, supported by specifications and tools, supports these methods. The first application is a building block system for large supply-chain models.
